So if you’re into games, last week was kind of like information overload. The console makers, the developers, the publishers- just about everyone- had some exciting news to share with everyone.
Starting everything off were several huge banners hanging in the entrance for E3. There was one right in the middle with Alma’s face on it (it’s scary seeing her much larger than you) and then two more with Point Man and Fettel (Again, it’s frightening seeing a larger than life Fettel). There were also some really cool column wraps that showcased the two brothers. It was, in my opinion, the best way to enter the expo.
WB Games was no different and they made sure F.E.A.R. 3 was front and center. WB Games had their own space full of demos and even the WB Water Tower. Within the space were theaters for public demonstrations of the key WB titles.
F.E.A.R. 3 had a house built with the theater inside. The house was pretty run down because not only had it weathered an atomic blast but those who survived in Fairport also were kind enough to decorate it with their insane, Alma-inspired drawings. These survivors were inundated with Alma’s psychic fallout, so their minds are shattered and they know something big is coming.
The inside of the theater housed about twenty seats, including two hideously awesome couches. There was also a survivor inside watching the demo as well. Spending the last couple months in Fairport forced him to eat some pretty heinous things. The walls were also decorated with the same cryptic messages of Armageddon. There was an altar built in the fireplace full of burnt candles, knives, and the remains of the survivors’ victims.
However, the best thing inside besides the air conditioning was the two 50” HD televisions and the 5.1 surround sound. Demos of the newly announced village level were given and offered a glimpse into the co-op experience. The level was one part haunted house, one part action, and a little taste of Powered Armor Combat.
Outside Alma made an appearance and let people get close enough to take a picture without melting their skin off. She was as pregnant as ever and I am fearful what things are going to be like when the baby finally decides it’s ready to enter this world.
John Carpenter and Steve Niles also came by to showcase their involvement with the game. They were kind enough to sign a few autographs and answer some press questions. They were a great addition to an already high-energy presentation.
The week went by incredibly fast and it was great to demonstrate so much to the fans. They got a look into an all new level, two all new enemy, and a firsthand glance at divergent co-op in action. Not only that but some light was shed on two new systems that not only add great depth to the game, but they also increase replayability.
The first is the scoring system that allows players to compete for scores and also earn temporary boosts. A skilled player will adjust how they play to stack these rewards and become unstoppable. The second system is the generative system. Not only are scares randomized, but so are enemy encounters. They will attack from different locations and in different numbers. This means each encounter is unique and cannot be memorized.
E3 was a wealth of information, but there are still many details waiting to be announced…
